 FAQs

  • Want to join our Expert Network Community? Learn more about our Expert training programs here.

  • We look for “experts” who have superpowers within particular functions (e.g. research, data science, strategy, product, LCA), sectors (e.g. climate technology, finance, services), and/or industries (e.g. clean energy, green architecture). Experts can range from those interested in climate action with minimal experience (e.g. studying environmental sciences, 0-2 years of experience), to seasoned professionals (e.g. climate technology investor, 10+ years of experience). Our training programs can help get you up to speed. We believe in putting in the time to train and develop future climate experts.

  • When experts are not on projects, their commitments within the community are relatively minimal - requiring attendance at least one OPF event a quarter.

For projects, time commitment ranges from 5hrs to 40hrs a week, in line with project timelines of one to three months. Some projects may be extended beyond these timelines, but experts will have the choice to stay-on or roll-off.

We allow for minor variances in work hours week-by-week (e.g. 5 to 10 hours) acknowledging that experts may have other commitments to attend to. However this must be coordinated with the team lead and other expert team members on the project to ensure we deliver consistent customer outcomes.

  • We operate remotely within a virtual office environment, meaning we use operating systems - like Slack, Google Suite, Notion, Zoom and Asana - to connect/communicate as a team and stay aligned on project outcomes.

We generally organize weekly check-in meetings with our customers, and weekly working sessions among our project team in between check-ins to work together on project outcomes.

  • We have hourly rates that we offer to our experts depending on their work experience and skillsets. From day one, we have committed to paying all experts who work on projects, and work to fairly compensate experts whilst not forgetting to prioritize climate impact over pure profits.

We invest a lot back into our expert community, including learning and development opportunities for those who work on multiple or longer-term projects with our core team.

  • Although we allow our experts to work in any location, timezone may have the biggest impact on your project delivery.

We prioritize matching experts who are generally located +/- 3hrs from our customer’s operating timezone, however we do encourage and support a remote working environment for our experts within reason

  • You will be working with at least two other experts on customer projects. These experts may be located anywhere in the world, but will have complementary skills to deliver project needs.

At a minimum our projects generally have at least three team members - including one team lead, senior associate, and associate. These team members are composed of core OPF team members and our experts from our community.

  • We get our vetted experts to fill an onboarding form where we record their sustainability and industry expertise areas, combined with your interests.

We use this information to make sure we match our experts on projects that align with their skills and interest, and the project needs.

We acknowledge that skills and interests are not static, so we will periodically resurvey experts to make sure our records are up to date.

  • Projects will be made available during the scoping phase with customers, and we will share these project proposals on our Slack Community’s projects channel and via email based on experts’ skills and interests.

  • We treat our experts as one OPF family, prioritizing looking out for one another first and foremost. We believe in the philosophy that we are able to do our best work when we can bring our best selves. We organize periodic OPF happy hours, brown bag lunches and occasional in-person meet-ups to connect and build deeper relationships as a team and wider expert community. We look forward to having you on board!
