Course Overview
Master the Mechanics of Carbon Accounting
Most sustainability professionals understand why carbon matters, but few know how to actually calculate it. As global regulations raise the bar, "ballpark estimates" are no longer enough for investors or regulators.
This course is designed to turn you into a technical practitioner. We strip away the jargon and focus on the GHG Protocol’s 5 key principles, giving you a repeatable framework for identifying material emissions, selecting emission factors, and building a climate inventory that stands up to scrutiny.

The course is fully self-paced, so you can work through the material on your own schedule with recommended timelines to help keep you on track. That said, learning alongside others makes a real difference, which is why we pair the course with optional monthly live labs. The live, interaction labs are where you'll work through the hands-on activities in a group setting, get real-time feedback, and discuss the provided case study with other learners. While the lab materials are available to you to complete asynchronously, we recommend joining the live sessions if you can!
-
All sessions are recorded and uploaded to the student portal within 24 hours. You can stay on track even if you miss a live touchpoint.
-
We offer a 14-day "Do the Work" guarantee. If you don’t like what you see in the first 14 days, we’ll give you a full refund.
-
Absolutely. While not everyone will be responsible for producing greenhouse gas inventories, GHG accounting underpins how organizations measure impact, set targets, and track decarbonization progress.
Understanding how emissions are calculated helps you speak the same language as sustainability, finance, and operations teams, and make more informed decisions in your own role.
Whether you work in marketing, sales, supply chain, or beyond, this knowledge is increasingly relevant as companies integrate emissions data into strategy, reporting, and day-to-day decision-making.
-
You’ll get hands-on experience through an interactive lab built around a sample company (“Nutty Niravana”). In this case study, you’ll practice calculating Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions using provided data. This exercise is designed to help you understand what these manual calculations look like in practice. By the end, you’ll feel confident building a basic GHG inventory yourself or transitioning to a software tool.
While we don’t fully get to replicate real-world data collection which can take months, we do cover best practices so you can effectively approach data gathering within an organization.
