How We Helped an Insurance Leader Evaluate Methane & GHG Tech Solutions
Client Challenge
A Fortune 200 insurance firm partnered with OnePointFive to leverage our practitioner expertise in identifying climate technology solutions for its Oil & Gas portfolio companies. These companies face growing stakeholder pressure to measure and manage greenhouse gases.
Methane abatement is a key “emergency brake” on near-term climate impact. Methane is 84-87 times more potent than CO₂ over a 20-year timeframe (GWP20), making leak detection and repair effective means of slowing near-term warming and a necessary bridge while systemic, longer-term carbon reduction strategies are deployed. The International Energy Agency estimates that 75% of methane emissions from O&G operations worldwide can be mitigated using existing technologies.
OPF’s Solution
Developed a 7-point evaluation framework to assess provider fit
Using internal stakeholder interviews and OPF’s proprietary tech due diligence methodology, we created a stakeholder-aligned scoring rubric to assess solution maturity, sector fit, and emissions mitigation potential, resulting in ranked lists of vendors in each analysis area.
Company names are placeholders representing different provider types evaluated during the analysis (content has been modified, anonymized, or abstracted to protect sensitive information and ensure client confidentiality.)
Interviewed and screened GHG detection and measurement technologies to broaden the solution space
We evaluated 25 carbon accounting tools through a combination of desktop research and product team demonstrations. We also analyzed 12 methane leak detection and repair tools across three technology types: satellites & fly-overs, non-intrusive hardware, and fixed hardware.
For both categories, we ultimately analyzed capabilities, support features, monitoring capacity, and regulatory alignment in addition to gauging fit to key company archetypes within our client’s portfolio.
Mapped recommended tech providers to selection criteria
Based on our 7-point selection criteria, we identified the top 5 tools across both GHG accounting and methane leak & flare detection. We then provided tailored recommendations on solution fit for individual portfolio companies, informed by each company’s climate transition progress, short- and long-term goals, and data visualization needs.

Key Outcomes
✅ Evaluated and interviewed 25 GHG accounting platforms and 12 methane detection tech providers over 6 weeks.
✅ Identified 5 leading methane leak & flare detection and GHG accounting providers based on a custom 7-point evaluation rubric.
✅ Mapped the recommended solutions to the clients portfolio, integrating considerations from the evolving measurement regulatory landscape.
✅ Created 6 solution provider profiles to simplify sharing recommendations with portfolio companies that may have limited prior knowledge on climate tech solutions.
✅ Developed 5-month implementation plan to action our recommendations internally, including pilot studies and outreach targets.
